5. Click the Start menu and select 'My Computer.' Double-click the C:\\ partition on your hard drive. Navigate to the folder displayed in Step 4. Rename the folder to 'Repository.' Close the window.
6. Return to the WMI dialog window in Step 4. Type 'net start winmgmt' (without quotation marks) and press the Enter key on your keyboard. Type 'EXIT' (without quotation marks) and press the 'Enter' key on your keyboard. Close the dialog window. The WMI infrastructure has now been repaired on your Windows XP installation.

1. Download the Windows Memory Diagnostic (See 'Resources').
2. Copy the program to a blank USB flash drive. Leave the flash drive plugged into the USB port.

3. Restart your computer. It should boot from the USB drive. The Windows Memory Diagnostic will run through its first pass. If the first pass detects errors, something has damaged your hardware. Otherwise, it will run additional passes indefinitely.
4. Exit the test during a later pass. According to Microsoft, the subsequent passes rarely find errors if the first does not.
5. Remove the flash drive and restart your computer.

1. Hit the 'Start' button and launch a command prompt with elevated privileges. In the search box on the 'Start' menu type in 'Command Prompt'. When this appears right click the program and click on 'Run as Administrator'.
2. Wait for the prompt to open, and when it does type in 'net stop winmgmt'. This will stop the WMI so we can fix it.

3. Navigate to 'C:\Windows\System32\wbem' and right click on the folder 'Repository' and rename it to something like, 'Repository_bad.'
4. Go back to the command prompt you used earlier and type in the command, 'net start winmgmt'.
5. Re-register the WMI by typing the following command into the command prompt, 'winmgmt /salvagerepository.' This command will make Vista assess the WMI folder and when it can't find it, (due to your renaming it earlier) and it will automatically fix all the errors caused by the old WMI files by creating new WMI components.

1. Find the 'My Computer' desktop icon and right-click it. A pull-down menu will appear. Select 'Properties.'
2. Click on the 'Advanced' tab. This will load a new page of options.

3. Select the 'Visual Effects' tab at the top of the window and deselect 'Animate Windows when minimizing and maximizing,' 'Fade or slide menus into view,' 'Fade or slide Tool Tips into view' and 'Fade out Menu items after checking.'
4. Click 'OK.' This will remove most if not all of the Sysfader effects, at the same time correcting related errors that used to come up during opening a new file or program.
