Check for Microsoft Virtual Machine Installation
1. Open Internet Explorer on your computer by double clicking the program icon located on your computer's desktop.
2. Select the 'Tools,' 'Internet Options,' 'Advanced' menu options.

3. Scroll down the listing of programs to see if the Microsoft Virtual Machine (MVM) is installed on your computer. If the application is not listed, then the application is not installed. If it is, you will need to manually remove the application since Microsoft no longer provides the MVM removal tool for download and usage.
4. Exit Internet Explorer by selecting the 'File' and 'Exit' menu options on Internet Explorer.

5. Select the 'Start' and 'Run' menu options to open the DOS command prompt.
6. Enter the following command to initiate remove of the MVM from the DOS command prompt:
RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection java.inf,UnInstall
7. Select the 'Yes' menu button to confirm your desire to remove the MVM from your computer. Restart the computer when prompted by the Operating System to proceed with the removal.
8. Open windows explorer after computer restart by enter the 'Windows E' keys simultaneously.
9. Delete the following files and folders from your computer by single clicking the file or folder followed by depressing the 'delete' key on your computer:
c:\winnt\java, c:\winnit\inf\java.pnf, and c:\winnt\system32\jview.exe
10. Select the 'Start' and 'Run' menu options followed by entering 'regedit' to open the operating system's registry editor.
11. Enter 'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Java VM' in the search menu option. Single left click the registry entry followed by the 'delete' key.
12. Enter 'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\AdvancedOptions\JAVA_VM' in the search menu option and single left click the entry followed by the 'delete' key to finish removing the MVM from your computer's registry.

13. Navigate your computer's web browser to the Sun Java download site listed in the resources below.
14. Select the 'Free Java Download' menu button followed by the 'Save File' menu option on the subsequent dialogue box prompt.
15. Double click the Java installer file after download has completed.
16. Accept the default menu prompts presented by the Sun Java installer.
17. Restart your computer to complete the Sun Java installation on your Windows XP computer.
