How to Fix the “Unmountable Boot Volume” Error Message in Windows XP

Sunday, September 16, 2012 Off

Diagnose the 'Unmountable Boot Volume' Error
1. Determine if you have your BIOS settings configured so as to force faster UDMA modes. In this case, you can solve the problem if you restart your computer, enter the BIOS and then load the 'fail-safe' default settings. Next, reboot the computer and the problem will be fixed.
2. Find out if you used the wrong IDE cables. This error can commonly be caused when you swap hard drives and use the wrong IDE cables to connect them. You may experience this error if your computer uses Ultra Direct Memory Access, or the UDMA hard-disk controller, with a standard 40-wire connector cable. In this case, you can fix the problem simply by using the correct IDE cables when using these hard-disk controllers.

3. If none of these possible causes corresponds with your problem, then complete the steps in Section 2.
Resolve the 'Unmountable Boot Volume' Error
4. Boot up your computer from your Windows XP installation CD. Insert the XP CD into your CD-ROM drive and turn on your computer.
5. Set your BIOS to boot from CD. Your system’s BIOS settings can be opened by hitting the F2, F8 or Delete key on your keyboard as the computer boots up. The specific key differs depending on your computer’s manufacturer. When you see the message 'Press any key to boot from CD,' tap any key on your keyboard and wait until you see the “Welcome to Setup” screen.
6. Hit 'R' to use your Recovery Console to repair the installation. If you have a dual-boot computer, you need to select the particular Windows installation you would like to access.
7. Type in your administrative password when the computer prompts you. If you have no password, simply press Enter. This will bring you to the command prompt.
8. Type 'CHKDSK /R' and press Enter. CHKDSK will now scan and repair your hard drive. Type 'Exit' when this process is complete
9. Press 'Enter' to restart the computer. Your computer should now boot properly, without that annoying error.

How to Copy an Error Screen to WordPad

Saturday, September 15, 2012 Off

1. Leave the error window open when it pops up. Click anywhere on the window to make it the 'active' window. When a window is not active, the colored bar at the top appears slightly lightened. Once you click on the window and make it active, the color on the bar is more vivid.
2. Press the ALT key and the 'Print Screen' button on your keyboard. Sometimes this button is labeled 'prt sc' or 'prnt scrn.' The ALT Print Screen combination captures a screen shot (a picture of the screen) of the active window, which in this case is the error message. The screen shot is stored in your computer's memory much like if you were doing a 'cut and paste' operation in your word processor.

3. Open WordPad by clicking the Windows Start button (the Start button if you're using Windows XP) at the bottom-left corner of your desktop and selecting All Programs, then Accessories and then WordPad.
4. Hold down the CTRL key and the letter 'V' at the same time, and the error window will paste in your WordPad document. If you want to email the document with the error message, then save the WordPad document and attach it to an email. If you want a hard copy of the error window, print the document.

How to Fix Microsoft Errors for Free

Tuesday, September 11, 2012 Off

1. Visit the Microsoft Knowledge Base online. The complexity of Microsoft products requires a central portal for documentation and troubleshooting, and the Microsoft Support website tackles the majority of errors. Users can search for a particular error message and retrieve possible solutions. The service is free of charge. Many times, the fix for a Microsoft error requires an operating system update. These programs are easily downloaded through the support center and are available for free to registered Microsoft users.
2. Investigate the warranty protection provided by Microsoft for the software package experiencing errors. If a replacement for your program is necessary to resolve the error, it may be handled for free by Microsoft. Warranties eventually expire and do not cover all potential issues.

3. Confirm if your computer system is still under warranty by the computer manufacturer. While an actual replacement of the computer may not be necessary, manufacturer warranties often include free technical support to troubleshoot any Microsoft problem you encounter. A technician will be able to connect to your PC directly and interact with the system in real-time. Most software problems are addressed easily via this service.
4. Firefox users may install the ErrorHelp extension, which adds a worldwide database of errors to this popular web browser application. The program enables a user to input a specific Microsoft error and search for solutions based on past experiences by ErrorHelp users. The results may be quick and efficient answers for any Microsoft error, and for free.

Select that option to enabled JavaScripts, if the Add-on is blocking them. Numerous script-blocking Add-ons exist, so the procedure will vary depending on the Add-on used. If you are uncertain, consult your Add-on's documentation for more explicit instructions.
8. Check your Anti-virus or Firewall programs for 'Script Blocking' or 'Script Shields.' Again, the procedure for enabling scripts with these programs vary widely, so consult your software's documentation.
