Determine Windows Version
1. Click 'Start' and select 'Run.' Alternatively, you may select 'Start Search.'
2. Type 'msinfo32.exe' into the text box and press 'Enter' or click 'OK.' This will open the System Information window.

3. Highlight 'System Summary' and locate the entry for 'System Type.' The value 'x86-based PC' is for the 32-bit version of Windows. The value 'x64-based PC' is for the 64-bit version of Windows.
Install Windows Update Service
4. Click the appropriate TrustedInstaller file for your version of Windows (see Resources).
5. Choose 'Save File' and select 'Desktop.' Click the 'Save.'
6. Double-click 'windowsupdateagent20-x86.exe' or 'windowsupdateagent30-ia64.exe' to install the Windows Update Agent.
7. Reboot your computer, if prompted, after completing the installation.
Reset Windows Update Components
8. Go to the Microsoft Web page for knowledge base article 971058.
9. Scroll down and click the 'Fix-It' button. Click the 'Run' button when the File Download dialog box appears on the screen.
10. Select 'Default' for the mode and then follow the instructions in the Fix it wizard. Restart your system, if prompted, to complete the process.
