1. Boot Windows 98 into 'Safe Mode.' Hold down the F8 key as the computer starts up. Choose 'Safe Mode' from the boot menu.
2. Click 'Start' and point to the 'Settings' choice. Select 'Control Panel.' Double click the 'System' icon in the 'Control Panel' window.
3. Choose the 'Device Manager' tab.
4. Expand 'System Devices' by clicking the plus sign next to that option.
5. Double click on 'Advanced Power Management support.' Choose the 'Settings' tab in the dialog box.
6. Check the box next to 'Force APM 1.0.' Click 'OK.'
7. Reboot your computer into normal Windows 98 mode.
