Clean Printer Install
1. Navigate to Control Panel > Printers and delete all printers by right-clicking on printer icons and selecting 'Delete.' If you don't see any printers, go to Control Panel > Add/Remove programs and uninstall/remove programs relating to the printer. The spooler error could be caused by a defective print driver. This will delete all drivers.
2. Download the latest driver for your printer from the manufacturer support site for your printer model. Don't use the CD that came with the printer to install unless you're sure it has a Windows XP certified driver.

3. Double-click the driver to start the installation of your printer driver.
4. Test the printer by printing any document or going to Control Panel > Printers > Properties > Print Test Page. If the test page prints correctly, your Printer Spooler is working.
Restart Printer Spooler
5. Click Start > Run. Type in services.msc and press 'Enter.'
6. Scroll down to the service 'Print Spooler' and double-click.
7. Select the 'Recovery Tab' and make all three options read 'Restart the Service.' Click 'OK' or 'Apply.'
8. Restart your computer and attempt to print a test page. If the test page prints correctly, your Printer Spooler is working.

1. Close all open error messages.
2. Insert the CD for the program being used (for example, Office 2000).

3. Start the program or try to use the feature that caused the error message.
4. Wait as Windows installer locates the needed files and automatically begins the installation process.
5. Navigate on the CD for the provided file name if prompted for a file. Select it, and click OK. This should only happen if Windows installer cannot find the file.

Browser Proxy Settings
1. Double-click the 'Internet Explorer' shortcut on your desktop to launch the browser. Click the 'Tools' menu and select the 'Internet Options' link from the menu. The 'Internet Options' dialog box displays onscreen.
2. Select the 'Connections' tab and the 'LAN Settings' button to launch the 'LAN Settings' dialog box.

3. Click the 'Use Proxy Server for your LAN' check box, if checked to remove the check mark, and then the 'OK' button twice to exit both dialog boxes.
Modified Host Files
4. Click the 'Start' button and type 'c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts' in the 'Search' box, then press the 'Enter' key on your keyboard to open the folder location.
5. Double-click the 'Hosts' file, select 'Notepad' on the 'Open With' window, and then click the 'OK' button to launch the file in Notepad.
6. Highlight all the GameGuard text entries and remove them by pressing the 'Del' key on your keyboard. Click the 'File' menu and select 'Save' from the drop-down menu, then exit Notepad to finish the process.

Blank Password
1. Access user accounts in Windows XP. Click 'Start' and 'Control Panel' and double click 'User Accounts.' Find the user who is associated with creating the task in the task scheduler. The account you used to sign into Windows XP before attempting to schedule the task is the user that is associated with that task.
2. Click on that user. Next, click 'Create a Password.'

3. Type in a new password. Click 'Create Password.' Close all programs and restart Windows.
4. Open Task Scheduler by clicking 'Start,' 'All Programs,' 'Accessories,' 'System Tools' and finally 'Scheduled Tasks.' Reconfigure the task that caused the error message and, when asked, provide the new user name and password. If the task is created, the problem is resolved.
Startup Program Restricting Permissions
5. Download Windows Defender from the Microsoft website. Double click the installation file and run the installation.
6. After the installation is complete, open Windows Defender by clicking 'Start,' 'All Programs,' 'Windows Defender.'
7. To see a list of software programs that run on startup, click 'Tools,' then 'Software Explorer.' Displayed will be the list of all software programs that run on startup. Click the name of any security or anti-virus program that might be interfering with permissions and then click 'Disable.'
8. Exit all applications and restart your computer. After your computer is restarted, reattempt the task or process that cased the error message.
9. Check the settings for each disabled security program to determine which caused the error message and change the appropriate setting. Open Windows Defender and re-enable each security program to open on startup.

Clean Installation Disc
1. Check the installation disc for any fingerprints, scratches or smudges. If the data is unable to be read from the disc, the 1628 error message may be generated.
2. Use a microfiber cloth lightly dampened with water to gently clean the disc. Wipe from the inside of the disc directly outwards, never in a circular pattern.

3. Attempt to reinstall the program after cleaning the disc. If the disc is clean and the error persists, there may be a problem with InstallShield.
Repair InstallShield
4. Disable running process of InstallShield. They may have crashed and need to be restarted. Access the task manager by pressing 'Ctrl Alt Del'and selecting task manager. Under the processes tab disable 'idriver.exe' and 'msiexec.exe.'
5. Navigate to 'C:\Program Files\Common Files.' Right click on the 'InstallShield' folder and select 'Rename.' Change the folder name to 'InstallShield1' and press enter to confirm it. Run the install again; Windows will attempt to reinstall the needed InstallShield files.
6. Download Windows Installer from Microsoft, if the install produced the 1628 error after renaming the InstallShield folder. The downloaded file will check that your version is up-to-date. Older versions may have latent bugs or errors and be incompatible with what you are trying to install.
7. Create a new user account with administrator rights. Log out of the current user account and into the new account. This will help eliminate any user rights conflicts that may be causing the 1628 error message.
8. Attempt to install the program again. If the 1628 error appears again, than there may be something wrong with the install medium such as a scratched and damaged disc or faulty reader. Alternatively, a corrupted file in the operating system or virus can also cause the 1628 error message.

1. Click on 'Start.' Click 'Run.'
2. Type 'msconfig' (no quotes) in the Open box. Click 'OK.'

3. Select the 'Services' tab.
4. Scroll down and find the Windows Installer option. Click on the check box next to it to select it. Click 'OK.'
5. Restart your computer.

1. Select the 'Run' option from the Start menu.
2. Type 'scanreg' in the Run text box and click the 'Run' button. ScanReg will then scan your machine for registry errors. If no errors are detected, your registry is clean and no further action is required.

3. Type 'scanreg/fix' in the Run text box and click the 'Run' button. If your initial scan detected problems in your registry, this command will scan the registry again and fix any errors.

Removing Drwtsn.exe
1. Log in to the Windows administrator account.
2. Click 'Start' in the lower-left corner of the screen. Then click 'Run.'

3. Type 'cmd' and press 'Enter' to open a command prompt window.
4. Type 'cd c:\windows\system32' followed by pressing 'Enter.'
5. Type 'del drwtsn32.exe' and press 'Enter' to delete this file.
Disabling the Dr. Watson Program
6. Log in to the Windows administrator account.
7. Click 'Start' in the lower-left corner of the screen. Then click 'Run.'
8. Type 'drwtsn32' and press 'Enter' to open the 'Dr. Watson' window.
9. Uncheck all boxes under 'Options' in the 'Dr. Watson' window. Click 'OK.'

Fix Windows XP From the Control Panel Screen
1. Roll back the driver device by selecting 'Performance and Maintenance' from the Control Panel. Hit 'Properties,' click the 'Driver's' tab and then 'Roll Back Driver.'
2. Disable a device by clicking 'Performance and Maintenance' from the Control Panel. Choose the 'Hardware Tab,' scroll down to 'Device Manager,' and disable the device that is causing problems by right-clicking with your mouse.

3. Locate the 'System Restore' on the left side of the screen after selecting 'Performance and Maintenance' from the Control Panel.
4. Add or remove programs that appear when you click on 'Add or Remove Programs' from the Control Panel.
Repair Windows XP Using the Operating System Disc
5. Place the Operating System disc into the E Drive tray. Restart your computer.
6. Choose the 'To setup Windows XP now press ENTER' option.
7. Press the 'F8' key to agree when the license page comes up. Key in 'R' to repair Windows XP. The Setup Wizard prompts you along the way.
Reinstall a Fresh Copy of Windows XP Using Recovery Console
8. Place the Operating System disc into the E Drive tray. Restart your computer. When 'Press any key to boot from CD' displays on the screen, select the first option 'To setup Windows XP now press ENTER.'
9. Press the 'F8' key to agree on the license page. Select 'To continue install a fresh copy of windows XP without repairing, press Esc.'
10. Pick 'To continue install a fresh copy of windows XP without repairing.' Press the 'Esc' key and the partitioning screen displays.
11. Press 'Enter' if you have a partition, then select 'Format the partition using the NTFS file system.' If don't, select default settings to create a partition.
12. Ignore the 'Press any key to boot from CD.' The Setup Wizard continues to download important files onto your computer. After the prompt says 'finish,' setup is complete.
Repairing Windows Vista Using Startup Repair
13. Access 'Startup Repair' through the 'Windows Recovery Environment.' You must have the Windows Vista DVD in the DVD drive.
14. Wait for the 'Press any key to boot from CD' message to appear. Then it tells you 'Windows is Loading.' The next screen is your time and language settings.
15. Configure language settings and time, and then press 'Next.' The following screen is the 'Install and Repair' screen.
16. Choose to 'Repair Your Computer,' and the computer then scouts for all Vista installations. Next the 'System Recovery Options' appears.
17. Highlight the installation you want to fix, load any drivers that you need and press 'Next.' If problems are found, then the 'Startup Repair' dialog box appears, and searches for problems.
18. Upload the 'Status Repair' box. Additionally, another box appears asking if you want to restore. It's recommended you don't, so simply hit 'Cancel' to continue the repair.
19. Use 'Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool' to check for memory errors. Select the 'Command Prompt' to remove viruses and malware. Learn more about this through the 'How to use the Command Prompt in the Vista Windows Recovery Environment' manual.

1. Insert your flash drive into an available USB port on your computer.
2. Click the 'Start' button in Windows XP or the Windows logo button in Windows 7 and Vista. Click 'Run' in XP. In the 'Run' box in XP and in the 'Search files' box in Vista and 7, type 'devmgmt.msc' and press 'Enter' to open the Device Manager. Double-click 'Disk Drives' in the list to expand it. Right-click the name of your USB flash drive and click 'Properties.' Select the 'Policies' tab. Click 'Optimize for performance.' Click 'OK.' Close the Device Manager window.

3. Click the 'Start' button or Windows logo button. Click 'Computer' or 'My Computer.'
4. Double-click the drive letter of your USB flash drive to open it.
5. Click on all the files you want to save to highlight and select them. Hold the 'Ctrl' button while you click to select multiple files. Right-click the selected files and click 'Copy.' Click the 'Minimize' button in the top right corner of 'My Computer' or 'Computer.'
6. Right-click anywhere on the desktop background and click 'Folder' from the 'New' menu. Enter a name for the folder to which you're going to save the files from your flash drive; press 'Enter.' Double-click the folder to open it. Right-click anywhere in the folder and click 'Paste' to paste the files from your flash drive to the folder. Close the folder window.
7. Click the 'My Computer' or 'Computer' icon in the Taskbar at the bottom of the screen to restore it and make it an active window. Click 'My Computer' or 'Computer' in the left column.
8. Right-click your USB flash drive in the 'Devices with Removable Storage' section. Click 'Format.' In the 'File System' drop-down menu, click 'FAT32' or 'NTFS.' Click 'Start' to automatically run and complete the formatting process.
9. Locate the saved folder on your desktop that contains the files you saved from your flash drive. Click the folder and drag it over top of your flash drive icon in the 'My Computer' or 'Computer' window.
