Windows

1. Place your Windows 7 disc in your computer and restart your computer.
2. Look for the prompt 'Press any key to boot from CD/DVD' and press 'Enter.' This will load up the 'Windows 7 Setup' page.

3. Select your language preference and click 'Next.'
4. Select 'Repair your computer.' Select 'Windows 7' from the list and click 'Next.' This will open the 'System Recovery Options' page.
5. Select 'System Restore.' This will open the 'System Restore' page and click 'Next.'
6. Select 'Choose a different restore point' and click 'Next.'
7. Select a restore point from the list and click 'Next.'
8. Click on 'Finish.' You computer is being restored.

System Configuration Utility Method
1. Click the 'Start' button on your computer's desktop.
2. Click the 'Run' icon.

3. Type 'msconfig' into the Run box.
4. Click 'OK.'
5. Click the 'General' tab located on top of the 'System Configuration Utility' dialog box.
6. Navigate down to the 'Selective Startup' section and select or deselect each option in this category, rebooting the computer after each option is selected. This method narrows down the problem to your startup programs, which can be uninstalled in the 'Add or Remove Programs' section, fixing the problem in the process.
Remove Software Method
7. Press the 'F8' key continuously as Windows is booting up. Choose 'Safe Mode' and press the 'Enter' key while in the 'Windows Advanced Options Menu.'
8. Enter Windows via your personal account.
9. Click on 'Start' in the lower left corner of the desktop.
10. Click the 'Control Panel' option and select 'Add or Remove Programs.'
11. Browse to the software application installed right before the 'Windows Protection Error' problem began as this application is probably the cause, and click on the 'Change/Remove' button. This action will uninstall the software creating the error, thus removing the error from your computer.
Removing Hardware/Driver Method
12. Click on the 'Start' button found on your desktop.
13. Right-click on the 'My Computer' icon in the menu, then scroll down and choose 'Properties.'
14. Click on 'Hardware>Device Manager' in the 'System Properties' dialog box.
15. Navigate to the hardware or driver that was installed right before the Windows Protection Error problem started. Right-click on the selection and select 'Uninstall' in the menu. This will uninstall the hardware creating the Windows Protection Error on your computer, thus eliminating the error.

1. Open your Web browser and navigate to a page where you can download dbghelp.dll for free. A link to one of these sites can be found in the Resources section below.
2. Click the download link and follow the on-screen prompts to save the file to your computer.

3. Double-click the file after it finishes downloading. It will open in Winzip or your computer's default unzipping utility. Click the 'Extract' button and select your desktop as the destination for the unzipped file.
4. Double-click the 'My Computer' icon and navigate through the file directory to the system folder for your version of Windows. The file path is 'C:\Windows\System32' for 32-bit versions of XP and Vista, 'C:\WindowsSysWOW64' for 64-bit versions of XP and Vista, 'C:\WINNT\System32' for Windows NT and 2000, and 'C:\Windows\System' for Windows 95, 98 and ME.
5. Drag the dbghelp.dll file from your desktop into the system folder. If a version of this file already exists in the system folder, you will be asked if you want to replace it. If this happens, click 'Yes.'
6. Reboot your computer. The new .dll file will be active after you reboot.

1. Insert your Windows XP Pro CD into the CD drive and reboot your computer.
2. Press the letter 'R' on your keyboard when the 'Welcome' screen appears. Be patient, getting to the welcome screen takes some time. This will bring up the Windows Recovery Console.

3. Enter your administrator password. If you don't know what this is, just hit 'Enter.'
4. Select option '1.' This screen is showing you the various Windows installations on your computer. This is only a concern if you have a multi-boot system, most of the time that will not be the case. If you see more than one selection, and you are not sure which number to choose, go ahead and select '1.'
5. Wait for a few minutes, this process takes some time. When the recovery console has loaded, your screen will have a command prompt or look something like 'C:\'
6. Type the following commands, without the quote marks. 'Copy D:\I386\NTLDR C:\' hit'Enter.' Next, type 'Copy D:\I386\NTDETECT.COM C:\' hit 'Enter.' In these two commands, the 'D' represents the CD drive that holds your Windows disk. This assumes that drive is letter D. You will need to change this letter if your CD drive is labeled with a different letter.
7. Remove the Windows CD and restart your computer.

Fix Registry and Clean Temp Folders
1. Download and install a registry cleaner program onto your computer. This software will automatically empty out temp folders and fix registry errors that cause programs to malfunction.
2. Close your browser windows and any other running program.

3. Open the registry cleaner program and direct it to scan and fix your Registry and clean out old folders. Wait for the program to scan your computer for errors and empty out old files.
4. Restart your computer.
Update Visual Basic Software
5. Go to the Visual Basic Updates page. This is where you can download and install new Visual Basic runtime files to fix the overflow problem.
6. Click on 'Download' and save the file to a location on your computer. Wait for it to download.
7. Double-click on the file to install it automatically. Restart your computer when the installation is complete.

1. Place the flash drive in the computer with the Ntdetect error. Press control-alt-delete to restart the computer after you see the Ntdetect error message.
2. Let the machine boot into Windows. The use of a flash drive with a working Windows installation allows you to use the file manager and many common Windows tools. Go to the root directory of the flash drive.

3. Select 'Options' from the Tools menu in Explorer. Make sure that you can view hidden files. Exit options.
4. Find ntdetect, ntloader, and boot.ini from the list of files in the root directory. Hold down the control button and right click on these three files. Select ' Copy' from the Edit menu.
5. Use the start menu to find 'My computer,' and click on the C drive. You want to be in the root directory of your hard drive. (This is not your desktop folder. The Root directory is designated c:\>. The C:\ designation is a holdover from the days of MS-DOS.) Paste the files into the root folder of your hard drive.
6. Select system shut down from the start menu. Choose 'Restart' to reboot the computer. Remove the flash drive from the PC.

1. Click the blue button in the far left corner. Click 'Computer' in the right pane.
2. Double-click the hard drive with the redundancy error. If it is the computer's primary drive, then it is the 'C:/' drive.

3. Click the 'Tools' tab and click 'Check now.'
4. Click the 'Start' button without changing any of the settings. The chkdsk utility will scan the drive for the redundancy error and other errors. A finish screen will display when the scan is complete.

1. Open Windows Explorer by clicking \'Start,\' \'All Programs,\' then \'Windows Explorer.\'
2. Navigate to the system32 directory by clicking \'C:\\\' in Windows Explorer, then double-clicking \'Windows\' and \'system32.\'

3. Right-click the \'Clbcatq.dll\' file in the system32 directory, click \'Rename,\' then type \'~Clbcatq.dll.\'
4. Open the Windows system service tool. Click \'Start,\' then \'Control Panel.\' Double-click \'Administrative Tools,\' then double-click \'Services.\'
5. Stop the COM service. Right-click \'COM Event Service\' in the services list, then click \'Properties.\' In the properties window, click the box next to \'Startup Type\' and click \'Disabled.\' Click \'Stop\' under \'Service Status,\' then click \'OK.\'
6. Restart your computer by clicking \'Start,\' \'Shut Down,\' then \'Restart.\'
7. Open the registry editor by clicking \'Start,\' \'Run,\' typing \'regedit\' into the Run box, then pressing \'Enter.\'
8. Click the plus sign next to \'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\' in the registry editor window, the plus sign next to \'SOFTWARE,\' then the plus sign next to \'Microsoft.\' Right click \'COM3\' under \'Microsoft,\' then click \'Delete.\'
9. Open a Command Prompt by clicking \'Start,\' \'Accessories,\' then \'Command Prompt.\'
10. Type \'cd %windir%\' into the Command Prompt window, then press \'Enter.\'
11. Unregister COM by typing \'rmdir /s Registration\' into the Command Prompt window, then pressing \'Enter.\'
12. Open the Windows Control Panel by clicking \'Start,\' then \'Control Panel.\'
13. Open the Windows Add/Remove Components tool by double-clicking \'Add/Remove Programs,\' then clicking \'Add/Remove Components.\'
14. Reinstall COM by clicking \'Next\' in the \'Add/Remove Components\' window.

Check for Updates
1. Restart your computer.
2. Click 'Start,' 'All Programs' and 'Windows Defender.'

3. Click the 'Check for Updates Now' button.
4. Download any updates provided. Proceed with the next section if you continue to receive error messages.
Manually Update Windows Defender
5. Restart your computer.
6. Visit the Microsoft Malware Protection Center. See Resources.
7. Download the latest updates for your type of operating system (32-bit or 64-bit). Save the file to your desktop or to your downloads folder.
8. Close your browser, and double-click the definition file you downloaded. Follow the on-screen prompts to complete the installation.
Update Windows
9. Click 'Start,' 'All Programs' and 'Windows Update.'
10. Click 'Check for updates.'
11. Select and download any critical or important updates.
12. Follow the on-screen prompts to complete the update process. Restart the computer if prompted.
Rename the Software Distribution Folder
13. Close all programs.
14. Click 'Start,' then 'Run.' Type 'cmd' (without quotes), and press 'Enter.'
15. Type the following lines in the command prompt box. Press 'Enter' after typing each line.net stop wuauservnet stop bitsren %systemroot%\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.oldnet start wuauservnet start bits
16. Close the command prompt box.

Update the Drivers
1. Boot your computer in safe mode. To do so, press the power button to turn the computer on and press the “F8” key every few seconds until the “Advanced Boot Options” appears. Use the down-arrow key to move through the boot options; choose “Safe Mode” and press “Enter.”
2. Open the “Start” menu on your Windows system. Click “All Programs>Accessories>Run” to open the “Run” function.

3. Enter “wupdmgr” in the “Run” box and press the “Enter” key on the keyboard. Windows searches the Internet for updates available for the operating system, and installs the updates automatically.
4. Launch the program that keeps displaying the System32.Dll error message from “Start>All Programs.” If the program launches without an error message, the System32.Dll file was replaced during the update.
Replace the File Manually
5. Download a new System 32 Dll file from a Dll file library. Since you won’t have access to the Internet in safe mode, you must do this on another computer. Dll file libraries where you can download a System32.dll file for free include DLL Download System, DLL Files and DLL Nerd (see Resources).
6. Go to the folder where the downloaded System 32 Dll file is saved, which is more than likely the system’s “Downloads” folder. Right-click on the System32.dll folder and select “Extract” from the menu to pull the actual files from the System32.dll folder.
7. Plug an external storage device, like a thumb drive, into the computer you used to download the System32.dll file. If the device folder doesn’t open automatically, go to “Start>Computer” and double-click the thumb drive in the drive list.
8. Return to the “Start” menu and click “Computer” again. Double-click the “C:” drive, go to “Users,” double-click the folder of the user account on which the Dll file was downloaded and double-click the “Downloads” folder. Drag and drop each of the files from the “Downloads” folder to the external hard drive folder.
9. Remove the external hard drive from the computer where you downloaded the System32.dll file and plug it into the computer that is missing the System32.dll file. If the external hard drive folder doesn’t automatically open, go to “Start>Computer” and double-click the drive to open it. Open the computer’s “Start” menu. Go to “Computer>C:>Windows>System32” to open the “System32” folder. Drag the System32.dll file from the external hard drive window into the “System32” folder. Click “Yes” if asked if you want to replace the original System32.dll file.
