Windows

1. Click the 'Start' button and click 'Run' or 'Start Search' (Windows Vista users).
2. Type 'services.msc' (without quotes) and press 'Enter' to open the Services console.

3. Double-click 'Automatic Updates' on the right panel and click the 'Log on' tab.
4. Click the current hardware profile in the 'You can enable or disable this service for the hardware profiles listed below' box, and click 'Enable.'
5. Click 'Apply' and the 'General' tab. Click 'Start' and 'OK' to save the changes. This error should no longer be displayed when you try to download automatic updates.

1. Use the “System Restore” feature of Windows XP to back up your computer’s registry in case something should happen to go wrong while removing the registry errors. To create the backup, go to the “Start” menu and “Run,” enter “%SystemRoot%\\system32\\restore\\rstrui.exe” into the “Run” box and click “OK.”
2. Choose “Create a Restore Point” on the first screen of the “Welcome to System Restore” window and click “Next.” Enter a name to help you recognize the restore point and click “Create.”

3. Download a registry cleaner to your computer. Free registry cleaners that are compatible with Windows XP include Free Registry Cleaner, Glary Registry Repair, Registry Cleaner and RegToy (see Resources).
4. Install the registry cleaner to your computer. Get to the downloaded program by selecting “Start,” “My Computer,” the “C:” drive and then the “Downloads” folder. Double-click the icon that has the name of the program you downloaded. When the setup wizard for the program launches, follow the screens to install.
5. Launch the registry cleaner. The main page of the program contains the only tool you need to find and remove errors in your computer’s registry.
6. Click the “Scan” or “Full Scan” option on the main page of the registry cleaner. Press the “Scan Now” button if prompted again. The registry cleaner scans the entire registry of your Windows XP system. As it finds errors, the files that contain those errors are listed in the registry cleaner window.
7. Move to the next screen of the registry cleaner when the scan is finished by clicking “Next.” A report of the errors found in the registry is displayed on the screen. Click “Next” again to get to the next screen.
8. Choose the “Delete” option offered on the last page of the registry cleaner. The registry cleaner removes all of the files with errors from your computer.

Update Windows
1. Click on the 'Start' menu.
2. Type 'Update' into the 'Search Programs and Files' box and select 'Windows Update' from the list of results. If you are using a version of Windows prior to Windows Vista, click on 'All Programs' and then 'Windows Update.'

3. Click 'Check for Updates' in the left pane.
4. Check the box next to each available update and click 'OK.'
5. Click 'Install Updates.'
Reinstall The DLL

1. Click 'Start,' open 'All Programs,' open 'Accessories,' open 'System Tools' and open 'System Restore.'
2. Click on 'Restore my computer' for Windows XP or choose the option to 'Choose a different restore point' for Windows Vista or 7.

3. Select a date prior to the time when the error began occurring.
4. Press 'Next' to restore your system, eliminating the error.

1. Download registry-cleaning software. Several free registry-cleaning software products with good reviews are available on the software review site CNET, including Registry Cleaner and RegToy. Once you have downloaded the program, double-click the 'start-up.exe' or 'setup.exe' file and follow the on-screen instructions to install the program onto your computer.
2. Open the registry-cleaning software. The main screen has several options, including 'Scan.' Depending on the software you have chosen, you may be given a choice between several different system scans. Choose the 'Full scan' to check every folder in your registry for bad files.

3. Click on the 'Start Scan' or 'Scan Now' button. The registry-cleaning software begins scanning the registry. A progress bar monitors the progress of the scan and, as the software finds corrupted or unnecessary files, it lists those files by name.
4. Press 'Next' or 'Continue' once the scan is complete. Most registry-cleaning software provides a detailed report when it has finished scanning the system. This report lists all the bad files found in your system's registry and recommends fixing those files. By pressing 'Next' or 'Continue' you are taken to the screen where you can either delete or restore the files.
5. Delete the files from your system. While registry-cleaning software usually includes a restoration option, which directs the software to attempt to fix any corrupted files, in most cases the corrupted files on your system are not essential to the running of applications and programs. If you do not recognize any program names in the files that the registry-cleaning software has found, it is more than likely safe to delete them. Deleting bad files from your registry has a more pronounced effect on the operation of your system than restoring the files.

Check for Possible Causes
1. Try opening Internet Explorer without add-ons. You can do this by browsing the Start menu and expanding the folder 'Accessories' and the sub-folder 'System Tools.' Click on 'Internet Explorer (No Add-ons).' If the program seems to function properly with the add-ons disabled, follow the next step.
2. Click 'Tools' and select 'Internet Options' inside of Internet Explorer. Select the 'Programs' tab and click on 'Manage Add-ons'. Disable anything on the list that is not by the 'Microsoft Corporation' under the 'Publisher' column. You may need to update Adobe Flash and Java after completing this step. If the errors still occur, continue to the next step.

3. Download an anti-malware scanning program and install it. Run a complete scan and remove any infection results.
Reinstall and Update Internet Explorer
4. Update your Internet Explorer by visiting the Microsoft website for Internet Explorer 8 (see Resources).
5. Download and install the appropriate version of Internet Explorer.
6. Reboot the PC to complete installation. Open the new Internet Explorer and follow the one-time setup wizard.

1. Attempt to either restart Windows or open the HP Photoshop Digital Imaging software (whichever brings up the error message).
2. Insert the installation disk into the computer when the error message appears. The disk will have been included when the HP computer was originally purchased.

3. Click 'OK' on the error message window. The installation disk will now run. When asked if you would like to repair or reinstall the software, chose 'Repair.' The installation disk will now scan the system to see what files need to be installed and corrected.
4. Click 'OK' when the repair has finished. The trayapp.msi error should no longer appear.

How to Clean the Temporary Directory
1. Double-click on 'My Computer' or right-click on the 'Start' menu and click on 'Explore.'
2. Find the 'Temp Directory' from its location or you may find it by clicking on the 'Windows' folder and then 'Temp.'

3. Click on the 'Edit' menu and select 'Select All,' then press 'Delete' on the keyboard.
4. Click on 'Yes' or 'Yes to All' on the dialog box.
How to have enough space for Installation
5. Delete temporary Internet files by opening the 'Internet Explorer' browser and clicking on the 'Tools' menu, then 'Internet Options' and choose the 'Delete Files...' button.
6. Empty deleted files from the Recycle Bin. On your desktop, double-click on the 'Recycle Bin' icon and when it opens, on the left pane, click on the 'Empty the Recycle Bin.'
7. Delete files in the temporary folder. Go to 'Programs,' find the 'Temp' folder and delete the files inside the folder.
8. Delete optional windows components and installed programs that are not in use. Click on 'Control Panel,' and uninstall them using 'Add/Remove Components.'
9. Use 'Disk Cleanup...' by going to 'My Computer,' right-click on the drive you want to clean, select 'Properties.' Under the 'General tab,' click on 'Disk Cleanup...' and wait until the drive is scanned. After the drive is scanned, click on the 'Disk Cleanup' tab and select the items you want to delete from the hard drive, and click 'OK.'
How to Unlock Files on the Machine
10. Close any application that is running using the 'Task Manager' and end the task. You can also close any application by right-clicking on the application you find in the 'System Tray.' Depending on the application, based on the available options, you can select 'Disable,' 'Close' or 'Exit.'
11. Reboot your computer if the computer is frozen.
12. Run the installation again after opened applications are closed. If your installation is attempted while applications are opened, it is possible to get error 1603. Closing applications and running the installation may fix the error.

13. Update the system with the latest version of Windows Installer Service. Go to the Microsoft website and search 'Windows Installer Service engine' that is used for older versions.
14. Choose one of older versions that you have. It could be for Windows 95/98/Me or Windows NT 4.0/2000.
15. Download 'Windows Installer Service' properly following Microsoft instructions.

16. Go to the 'Start' menu and select 'Control Panel,' click on 'Performance and Maintenance > Administrative Tools > Computer Management.'
17. Under the 'Computer Management' dialog box, click on 'System Tools > Local Users and Groups > Users.'
18. On the right pane, right-click your username and select 'Properties.'
19. Click on the 'Member Of' tab in the 'Properties' window at the top and make sure you see 'Administrator.'

Open the program to make sure you are not still receiving the run time 53 error message.

1. Navigate to one of the software-download sites listed in the resources. All of these provide software programs that can be used for fun, productivity and system maintenance. Many, but not all, of the programs are free.
2. Scroll through the available registry utilities, making sure the site lists only free programs (freeware) or that the program has 'freeware' listed in its properties or description.

3. Read through the reviews and product description of the registry utility to ensure the program does what is needed for the registry errors occurring. Reviews are helpful because they let other users know how well the program works and if it works as advertised.
4. Select a free registry utility to download. Install the program. Attempt to fix the registry errors, following the program's instructions.
